1 John 4:7 tells us that “perfect Love cast out fear.” Certainly, we are living in a time of fear. We can be afraid of whether we are going to get Covid-19 and how serious it will be? Many of us are afraid that we will lose income or even our jobs because of the economic downturn. These are in addition to the fears we face in our normal everyday life.
We know that the love we express is not perfect. So where does this perfect love come from. Only the love of God is perfect. It is so perfect that God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross so that we might have eternal life and relationship with God. His love is available to us as we seek God with all of our being (Matt. 6:33-34). The closer we get to God, the more we will feel His love.
We can express that love through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives inside us. This is important because sometimes as we bear with one another in love, God will call us to love people that are difficult to love. The Holy Spirit will help us to love such people. By expressing that love, we show people the perfect love of God.
Spend time today seeking to draw closer to the God of perfect love. Read Psalms 1-5. As you come across different characteristics or names of God, write then down and meditate on these characteristics. If you want, continue that journey through the psalms on the days ahead. - Tom Firasek
